Buyer’s Guide

Buying a turbo trainer is generally a price decision. How much you wish to spend depends upon your commitment to your training. The cheaper lines tend to be noisier, less fluid in action and have fewer features. We will try and guide you through those below:

Below £100 - View all

If you are starting out, consider spending no more than £100. These are basic systems with no readouts, no adjustment - just a magnetic or wind system giving resistance.

£100 - £200 - View all

Spending more than £100 enters you into resistance control territory. You will find trainers have a wire (like a brake lever) which you clamp onto your bars to give you control over resistance. Resistance is great if you spin out on the standard settings, you can recreate hills with this feature.

£200 - £500 - View all

The £200 to £500 price bracket is highly competitive with a vast array of features at your disposal. The more you pay here gets you a quieter fluid fan, more features, possibly a computer readout so you can monitor your progress.

Above £500 - View all

If you want all the bell and whistles, paying above £500 takes you into the territory of virtual reality cycling, wireless readouts and quiet fans.

Choosing your Turbo Trainer
Many modern turbo trainers look the same - so how do you know which is best for you? Well you need to work out how much to spend. The cheapest we'd recommend would be around £100 - these are standard machines which have decent flywheels, any cheaper and they will rattle and vibrate.

As for features, well if you want to see how you get on - it might be best to go for a cheap one, and if you get hooked upgrade at a later date. If noise is a real problem (i.e. you live in a flat) you'll need to spend some cash on it to get a better model.

If you have the money, you could try a computer setup where you can race others over the internet, even race friends! Good luck!
