Can I use a non QR bike on a turbo trainer?

Q:  Can i use an old raleigh lizard on a turbo trainer - it doesn't have a quick release rear wheel skewer system? is it much of a job to fit this if possible? Billy.

A: Hi Billy, yes it is, you just need to choose the turbo trainer carefully. Some will say they come with a specific skewer, but many of the modern turbo trainers now fit all skewer ends with either bolt or QR systems.

There is a problem to this though, and its this - it depends on the shape of the bolts on your Raleigh - say if there were larger than the opening in the turbo trainer they won't fit.

If you head over to somewhere like Chain Reaction, you can see in the photos that some turbos have a skewer in the photo and others don't - we THINK the ones that don't would be suitable -but i'd ring to check. See pic below:

Choosing your Turbo Trainer
Many modern turbo trainers look the same - so how do you know which is best for you? Well you need to work out how much to spend. The cheapest we'd recommend would be around £100 - these are standard machines which have decent flywheels, any cheaper and they will rattle and vibrate.

As for features, well if you want to see how you get on - it might be best to go for a cheap one, and if you get hooked upgrade at a later date. If noise is a real problem (i.e. you live in a flat) you'll need to spend some cash on it to get a better model.

If you have the money, you could try a computer setup where you can race others over the internet, even race friends! Good luck!
