I have owned the cycle simulator for the past 10 years and have been on and off training throughout this time. I went for it over a “normal” turbo trainer as it more stable, and as a sprinter, it’s really annoying to be sprinting and to have to concentrate on not falling over.

I don’t think the CS-1000 is very popular, I’ve never seen it in a bike shop – I bought mine from a recommendation from a pro.
USING
Once you have your bike set up – and it can take different sizes of frame using the sliders – the setup is very stable indeed. There is a readout that shows elapsed time, speed and miles ridden - this is all displayed in the large screen. On screen 2 it shows you wattage (very useful) calories and resistance (which can be altered using a handle).
ABUSING
The Cateye CS-1000 is apparently the choice of pro track sprinters, you can see why. Putting down a sprint is easy, the front of the bike never really moves, you can get it to topple over I’d imagine but it shouldn’t really happen. The wattage readout is essential for this type of work.

Turbo trainers usually run on the tyre using a roller - however this can lead to wearing of your tyre and in some circumstances over heating and problems with parts of the tyre disintegrating.
The Minoura E-RDA-80 does away with this problem, as it grips the rim - not the tyre. This uses the rim as resistance. Superb if you want to run a mountain bike (rim braked bikes only mind you) or an odd wheel size.

As we have discussed in the guides on the site, turbo training can be boring if left to your own devices.

Many local gyms and healthclubs have "Spinning" sessions that are basically gym bikes set up in a room with beat driven music. Our local one is run by Richard Dillon - he loves pushing his clients hard on the bikes.
